The two pairs of synonyms appear/seem and happen/chance are intransitive verbs and are not generally used in the continuous tenses. *appear/seem和happen/chance 這兩對同義詞都是不及物動詞, 一般不用於進行時態. They are commonly used in these two patterns 這四個詞通常用於以下兩種句型:
1 It appears/seems that he's resigned. 好像他已經辭職了.
It happened/chanced that she spoke fluent Swahili. 偏巧她很會說斯瓦希里語.
2 He appears/seems to have resigned. 他好像已經辭職了.
She happened/chanced to speak fluent Swahili. 她偏巧很會說斯瓦希里語. Chance is more formal than happen. *happen比chance更多用於口語. Appear and seem are used in a variety of other patterns *appear和seem還可用於其它多種句型
She appeared/seemed very confident. 她顯得很自信.
`Are they reliable?' `It appears/seems not.' '他們可靠嗎?''似乎不太可靠.'
`It's going to rain.' `So it appears/seems.' '要下雨了.''看樣子像.' So is often used for emphasis with happen/chance 為加強語氣, so常與happen/chance連用
It so happened/chanced that I'd met her a few years before. 碰巧我幾年前見過她.
